We bring a sense of humility & adventure to our work, seeking to produce distilled wonder in a bottle. Amber Lane is now widely-regarded as one of Australia’s best whisky distilleries, having taken out multiple national & international gold medals.

The Mary Rose: our 3600 litre Copper Still, with steam jacket & copper barrel insulation. Huge thanks to the artists at @burnswelding for creating one of the imperative cogs in our whisky production.

 

Our production ethics

Consistent high-quality mash bill that creates pleasing new make. Emphasis on the original barley together with a creamy sweetness.

Double-distillation, using a pot designed to maximise copper-contact, producing more complex flavour chains.

The best seasoned barrels, sourced from premium producers of Spanish Pedro Ximenez, Oloroso Sherry & Kentucky Bourbon.

Maximised ageing to produce more complex flavour profiles, using larger barrels than many other Australian whisky producers.

Skilled blending of individual barrels to produce consistently delicious whisky. 

Non-chill-filtration to preserve as many of the flavour-producing esters & congeners as possible.

A conscious preference for releasing our whisky at higher alcohol strength.

The Amber Lane story was forged in the stars. Friends & fellow amateur astronomers Rod Berry & Phil Townsend were enjoying rural night skies at Coonabarabran in 2017, when serendipity intervened. During a daytime excursion, they stumbled on a small whisky distillery - and a dream coalesced. A sense of destiny has marked every step that has followed….

Rod freely admits to being a “total whisky nerd”, having immersed himself in whisky knowledge for many years. As a long-time member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society & a student at the Australian Whisky Academy, Rod has a deep appreciation for the art & science of whisky production. 

One of Amber Lane’s strengths is Rod’s highly attuned palate, which he attributes to the discipline of having tasted well over 1000 different whisky expressions. As well as attending & hosting dozens of whisky tastings, Rod has curated a significant collection of whisky from around the world, & enjoys dissecting every dram he tastes. 

Phil is passionate about excellence in whisky production & oversees the daily operations at the distillery. Innovation drives Phil, as he seeks improvements at every level of production. Nothing brings Phil greater joy than wonderful aromas filling the warehouse - he can’t help but smile as he conducts the daily barrel inspections. He feels a calling to his work & his enthusiasm for Amber Lane spirit is infectious.

Amber Lane strives to produce refined, beautiful & delicious whisky in a traditional style, bringing satisfaction & joy to all those who partake. We focus on bringing together the natural sweetness of the barley in the new make, with high-quality aged casks from Spain & Kentucky that bring depth & richness to every dram.

In 2024, Amber Lane collaborated with Gosford whisky & wine bar, Parlour Lane, to showcase its whisky offering.

As an Amber Lane partner bar, Parlour Lane is home to an extensive range of our whiskies, available for tasting and sales. 

The Amber Lane brand is also heavily showcased across the bar – from signage and glassware, to bar mats and displays.

Parlour Lane will also host regular Amber Lane whisky tastings, with staff well-versed in our unique whisky-making technique and drams.
